Bid-offer Spread
It is used to describe the buy (ask) and sell (ask) price of a stock, currency, bond or other financial instrument. The difference between the two prices is the spread.
The buying and selling prices are determined by the market maker. When an investor wants to buy stocks, they go from the supply side to the market.
Thanks to the spread, the market maker makes a profit.
This is most apparent when buying foreign currency from a bank. If a currency exchange buys and sells during the day (and the exchange rates don't change), it makes money on the spread. The lower the spread, the more profitable the deal will be for the buyer.
